When I saw on the weather app that we were supposed to get hit with one more big snowstorm before spring, I got pretty excited. I was hopeful that this snowfall would bring some much-needed moisture to help green everything up. I also wanted to capture some beautiful winter photos, since I didn’t really get the chance to during this poor winter in Montana.
The storm arrived and dropped almost a foot of snow. I wasn’t planning on going out at first, since we got a lot more than I expected, but that quickly changed when I saw all the trees covered in a beautiful blanket of snow.
I decided to head out on a hike to capture the beauty of it all. I found myself walking through nearly a foot of snow everywhere I went, with even deeper drifts in places. I captured multiple photos of the heavily covered landscape before finding myself overlooking part of town.
After capturing some amazing photos of ravens and a bluebird, it started to get late. As I looked out over the distant landscape, I spotted a group of mule deer moving into a field. I captured quite a few photos of them. I’ve always wanted to photograph deer in a vast landscape—I love the minimalistic feel of seeing animals set against such a wide, open scene, and I was thrilled to finally capture that moment.
This photo captures the group with all their heads up, watching someone driving on a road in the distance.
