While walking along the Yellowstone River, I spotted two Common Mergansers in a small patch of open water. I slowly approached them and was able to sit nearby for a while. As I watched, they were doing something I had never seen a duck do before. They were feeding in an interesting way—simply dipping their heads beneath the surface of the moving water and slowly working their way upstream through the open channel. It was quite fun to watch, and I was able to capture several beautiful photos.
