On a cold February day, I found myself hiking into a piece of public land. At one point, I stopped and heard a group of turkeys on a distant ridge. I crossed a bottom and made my way to the other side, hoping for the chance to photograph some turkeys up close. I waited for a minute or two before hearing another turkey call sound off, but much closer this time.
I quickly got set up under a tree and waited to see if they’d come my way. Before long, a few showed up, and I could somewhat see them through the tree branches. Soon after, the group started getting riled up. Wondering what was bothering them, I got ready to take some photos. Then a young mule deer doe stepped out of the trees into the same clearing as the turkeys, and they hung out together for a while. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to catch any great photos since it was all through branches.
Soon after that, the group of turkeys kept walking my way. I stayed as still as possible, and they continued to get closer. They came within about ten yards, and I was able to capture some amazing, detailed photos of the turkeys, including this one. It was a special moment, and I was thrilled to capture this photo of such a beautiful hen.
