While hiking along the Yellowstone River, I came upon a large log jam, and to my surprise, a Red Fox appeared out of nowhere. I was caught off guard but quickly captured a couple photos of it watching me through the grass. Soon after, it trotted off into the log jam and disappeared.
I decided to wait for a while, hoping it would show back up. Assuming it had gone into its den, I chose to circle around from a different direction so I wouldn’t disturb it any further. As I started walking back to my car, I stopped at one spot after noticing a flash of red through the trees. I raised my camera and took this photo. I absolutely love how the fox contrasts against the dark trees—it makes for a great image and an even better story.
After thinking about it, I believe the fox was likely watching me the entire time through the trees and grass without me ever noticing. It makes you wonder what else is watching that we don’t see—how many animals and missed photos pass by every time we step into the woods.
